Chakra Identities
Throughout history, people have been aware of the chakras. Ancient Egyptians, the Chinese, Hindus, Sufis, Greeks, Native Americans, Maya and Incas knew them as a reflection of the natural laws of the cosmos. A chakra is a centre of organisation that receives, assimilates and expresses life. The word chakra means 'wheel' or 'disc'. There are seven major chakras stacked in a column of energy that spans from the base of the spine to the top of the head. This energy passes through the chakras like colours of the light spectrum and creates a rainbow effect. Physically, each chakra governs the seven main endocrine glands and influences the entire harmony of the body. As energy flows through each chakra the quality related to the specific chakra is stimulated. Although each chakra has its own dominant characteristics it also has within it, the infinite possibilities of the other six chakras. By using a range of techniques such as yoga, breathing, physical exercise, meditation and visualisation we can influence our health and well-being and, ultimately, our lives.
